Final cut studio on macbook1/17/2024 ![]() The Neural Engine, while still 16 cores, can perform up to 15.8 trillion operations per second, more than 40% more than the 11 trillion operations of the Neural Engine in the M1. M2 brings Apple’s latest custom technologies to the Mac, enabling new capabilities, better security, and more… M2 Secure Enclave, Neural Engine And Media Engine Combined with a larger cache and higher memory bandwidth, the 10-core GPU is designed to deliver a boost in graphics performance, bringing up to 25% more graphics performance than M1 at the same power level, and up to 35% better performance at its max power. ![]() M2 also features Apple’s next-generation GPU with up to 10 cores, which is 2 more two more than the M1. M2 brings all of this, plus new custom technologies and greater efficiency, to the completely redesigned MacBook Air and updated 13-inch MacBook Pro. ![]() It also delivers 50% more memory bandwidth compared to M1, and up to 24GB of faster unified memory, up from 16GB with the M1. Apple’s M2 takes their performance per watt of M1 even further with an 18% faster CPU, a 35% more powerful GPU, and the Neural Engine can process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second - over 40% more than the M1. M1 To M2 Performance Boostīuilt using second-generation 5-nanometer technology, TSMC’s next-generation N4P process is an enhanced version of the 5-nanometer process and is designed to deliver about 11% more performance and almost 22% more efficiency compared to the conventional 5-nanometer process used for the production of A15 and M1, M1 Pro and Max). The M2 SoC has 24GB of unified LPDDR5 memory, up 8GB from the M1. These changes mean that the M2 runs faster and comes with more graphics cores, with 9 or 10 GPU cores, up from the 7 or 8 that came with the M1. ![]() When it comes to the efficiency cores, they have the same cache size as the M1 but have been given other architectural improvements, like higher peak clock speeds and faster memory access. Most of the reviews I saw had very few if any negative things to say about performance, but it's clear that this is a first-gen product, and Big Sur still isn't ready for prime time. The M2 System on a Chip (SoC) has the same number of cores as the original M1 chip (8) with 4 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores as does the M1 but on the M2, the shared L2 cache on the performance cores, has been increased from 12MB to 16MB, and the clock speeds have been increased a little too. Sidenote: Don't buy into all of the hype from most of the tech reviewers raving about how great the M1 is for Final Cut. Jerry Schulze seems to be having a lot of the same issues I'm having. I have the feeling that I'm just going to have to wait for an update to fix these issues, but I'm curious to see if anybody else is having these same problems. What's also strange is that iStat Menus shows that the M1 Chip isn't even breaking a sweat, so it shouldn't be throttling, but the render times are getting higher and higher. Issue 5: Rendering time has severely increased - When I first started using the M1, this thing flew like a bat out of hell when rendering, now it seems like render times have slowed down dramatically. Issue 4: The damn beachball - Doesn't matter what I'm doing, Final Cut will just completely lock up for as long as a few minutes, then it will randomly come back and continue playback.until it starts dropping frames again. Issue 3: Background render is just broken - I've disabled and re-enabled background render more times than I can count, back I still have to keep manually rendering Issue 2: Audio dropouts: Audio will drop out during playback for 4 to 5 seconds at a time frequently. Issue 1: Playback drops frames like CRAZY! - I transcode all of the footage I'm using to 1080p ProRes 422 LT for better performance, but playback still drops frames ever 15 to 20 sec, even with "Better Performance" enabled Maybe I was super excited to finally get away from my 6-month-old Mac Mini + eGPU setup, that I didn't notice the performance issues, but it's really starting to annoy me. Ok, so I have no idea what's going on, but Final Cut Pro on my M1 Macbook Pro has completely shat the bed. Specs: 2020 M1 Macbook Pro 16GB 512 GB SSD - Editing SSD: Samsung T7 2TB connected with a 10Gbps USB C Cable Maybe I was super excited to finally get away from my 6 month old Mac Mini + eGPU setup, that I didn't notice the performance issues, but it's really starting to annoy me.
